Medullary thyroid cancer

Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a rare form of cancer of the thyroid gland. It usually occurs as an isolated case on its own (sporadic), but it is sometimes inherited (i.e. passed down from one generation to the next in a family). It originates from the parafollicular cells (C cells) of the thyroid, which produce calcitonin and behaves differently from the more common differentiated thyroid cancer.
